Na escola, com poeira, luz e dervixes

At school, with dust, light and dervishes

 

Em um sábado, os pais dos alunos foram convidados a levar os filhos para conhecer o novo prédio da escola que seria ocupado em breve.

On a Saturday, students’ parents were invited to bring their children to know the new school building that would be occupied soon.

         As famílias se espalhavam harmoniosamente pelo espaço amplo.

Families spread harmoniously over the ample space.

Outros percorriam as salas vazias em busca de algo ainda indefinido.

Other roamed around the empty rooms in search of something still undefined.

Silhuetas fluíam em caminhos longos, retos e claros.

Silhouettes moved freely in long, straight and clear paths.

Havia algo de Brasília naquele arranjo planejado de verde e arquitetura,  mas as árvores que espiavam a circulação em volta eram bem mais jovens do que as da cidade.

That planned arrangement of green and architecture reminded of Brasilia, but the trees peering at the comings and goings were much younger than those in the city.

Os laboratórios de física e biologia estavam intactos. Porém, já se buscava por algo nas salas ainda a serem exploradas.

Physics and biology laboratories were intact. Still, something was already searched for in the rooms yet to be explored.

Um quê cartesiano regia o jardim pedagógico ainda por acontecer. Era talvez o fato de que antes de ser plantada, a horta já parecia perfeita, ou seja, o imprevisto não havia sido previsto. 

There was a Cartesian feel in the yet to happen pedagogical garden. It was perhaps the fact that, before being planted, the garden already looked perfect, that is, the unexpected had not been expected.

As crianças exploravam o espaço de uma maneira mais aleatória.

Children explored the area more randomly.

Elas percebiam as superfícies planas e vazias como um convite para a corrida, sem que houvesse um propósito maior na busca delas que não fosse preencher o espaço. A descoberta da nova escola terminava sendo menos importante do que responder ao afã de ocupar a amplidão com a velocidade do corpo.

 

They took the flat and empty surfaces as an invitation for running. There seemed to be no greater purpose in their pursuit that was not the mere rush to fill space. Discovering the new school ended up being less important than responding to the eagerness to occupy the vast surface with the body's speed.

O espaço tornava-se o palco perfeito para a inquietude infantil. De olhos vendados, as crianças corriam atrás do que não pode ser visto.

The area became the perfect stage for child restlessness. Blindfolded, children ran after that which cannot be seen.

No pátio do primário, cores mais fortes intensificavam a corrida.

In the courtyard of the primary section, brighter colors intensified the race.

No laboratório, a exploração pedia um procedimento mais metódico.

In the laboratory, exploration called for a more methodical procedure.

Escapulir. Essa, porém, parecia ser a regra implícita do jogo no pátio. Escapulir do vácuo e dos roteiros que ainda não estavam condenados pelos rituais diários. Tudo ainda era mais uma questão de explorar.

To slip away: this, however, seemed to be the implicit rule of the game in the courtyard. To slip away from the void and from paths that were not yet doomed to daily rituals. Everything was yet a matter of exploring.

 

Há um misto de alegria e suspense em escapar do nada.

There is a mixture of joy and suspense in escaping from nowhere.

Certamente é mais seguro enquadrar-se nos procedimentos previsíveis.

It is certainly safer to fit into predictable procedures.

No final das contas, a educação é um aprendizado das regras do jogo a serem compartilhadas.

 

All things considered, education consists of learning the rules of the game that will then be shared.

As regras podem ser, por exemplo, as necessárias para montar as estruturas – de preferência, sem perder de vista a sombra da dúvida.

Rules can be, for example, those necessary to assemble structures - preferably without losing sight of the shadow of doubt.

Afinal, sem sombra não há luz e sem luz não há nada a ser descoberto.

After all, without shadow there is no light and without light there is nothing to be discovered.

Um labirinto de possibilidades pode se abrir para quem aceita entrar no jogo. Mas qual jogo?

 

A labyrinth of possibilities can open up for those who agree to play the game. But which game?

O desafio maior daquele jogo-local é fazer com que as possibilidades amanheçam.

The biggest challenge posed by that place-game is to allow possibilities to come to light.

Cabe à escola enquadrar a inquietação, submeter a busca a uma disciplina.

It is up to the school to frame restlessness, to submit the search to a discipline.

Mas desde cedo, há que alimentar também alguma transgressão, como a de quem não aceita o uso apenas disciplinado das instalações e inventa uma ocupação das janelas mais apropriada a sua estatura.

But early on, it must also allow some kind of transgression such as the one from whom does not accept only the disciplined use of the facilities and thus invents a usage of the window that is more appropriate to their height.

A disciplina para a indisciplina pode ser observada no uso desse templo previsto para eventuais dervixes. Aqui se propõe aos usuários que rodem em linhas retas num vai-e-vem que desemboque enfim em uma libertação dos rituais cotidianos. O jogo consiste em disciplinadamente nadar para abastecer o corpo com vitalidade e otimizar assim a vivência do restante dia.

Discipline for indiscipline can be observed in the use of this temple planned for eventual dervishes. Here users are invited to swim in straight lines circling back-and-forth until they finally release themselves from everyday rituals. The game consists of swimming in a disciplined way in order to supply the body with enough vitality and thus optimize the experiencing of the rest of the day.

Só uma percepção acesa poderia, por exemplo, enfim se dar conta de que o alvo da procura naquele dia era nada mais era do que a luz e a poeira.

Only a lively perception could, for example, finally realize that the target of the search in  that day was nothing more than light and dust.

De fato, foram previstos dois pontos altos nas extremidades da escola cuja função é aparentemente apenas servir de locais de observação de massas luminosas brancas e ambulantes flutuando sobre um fundo azul.

In fact, there were two high viewpoints in the school ends whose function was apparently only to serve as sites for observing the white luminous moving masses floating on the blue background.

O que não impediu que as duas meninas achassem mais adequado utilizar o meio do pátio como ponto de observação desses aglomerados de gotículas.

What did not prevent the two girls from finding more adequate to use the middle of the courtyard as a site for observing those droplets clusters.

Outros pontos de observação das nuvens foram espalhados pelo prédio; alguns deles situados no subterrâneo.

 

Other cloudgazing sites were scattered throughout the building; some of them situated underground.

Sendo assim, as escadas foram construídas de tal forma que em diversos lugares tem-se a impressão de se estar ascendendo aos céus.

Consequently, the stairs were built in such a way that in some places one is left with the impression of ascending to heaven.

Como em certos jogos eletrônicos cujo objetivo deve ser descoberto ao longo da partida, aquela situação finalmente revelava o alvo da busca proposta pelo espaço vazio. A luz é portanto o que norteia o jogo do prédio – tudo foi arquitetado para trazer maior clareza aos frequentadores do local. E o pó era enfim o que havia para ser visto.

As in certain electronic games whose goal must be found during the game itself, the situation finally revealed what was the target of the search proposed by that empty space. Light is therefore what guides the game in the building – everything was designed to bring greater clarity to the attenders of that place. And dust was finally what was there to be seen.

Aqui não há pátina do tempo; vê-se apenas uma poeira fina à espera de ser espanada para que tudo possa enfim começar. Esse mesmo véu cobria também os laboratórios e salas deixando tudo envolto em um mesmo fino manto inicial. Eis aqui um caso singular em que no começo fez-se o pó e do meio do pó deu-se a luz. Em vez do cansaço da pátina do tempo há o chamado da poeira clara à ação.

There is no patina of time here; instead, there is only a thin dust cover waiting to be wiped off so that everything can finally begin. This same veil also covered laboratories and rooms leaving everything wrapped in the same fine initial mantle. Here is a singular case in which at the beginning dust was made and from dust came light. Instead of weariness of the time patina there is the call of the clear dust to action. 

Esse novo mundo não era acolchoado com superfícies opacas, manchadas e forradas de história. As crianças, essas criaturas que recomeçam de outra forma a vida dos pais, aguardavam ansiosas por pelo menos dois outros recomeços: o do sábado e o da vida no novo espaço. Em meio à forte luminosidade e à poeira branca, nascia assim um prédio.

This new world was not padded with opaque and stained surfaces lined with history. Children, these creatures who resume differently the life of their parents, were waiting anxiously for at least two new beginnings: of the Saturday and of life in that new space. Thus was born a building, amid blinding light and white dust.

Com algum otimismo, pode-se esperar que a educação não irá restringir o potencial daqueles que vão se enclausurar naquele prédio durante parte da vida, mas abrirá suas mentes para que um dia talvez possam construir outros prédios que ajudarão outros a enxergar a luz e a lidar com a sombra.

With some optimism, one can hope that instead of restraining the potential of those who will be cloistered in that building during part of their lives, education will open up their mind so that they may perhaps one day build other buildings that will help others to see the light and cope with shadow.
