02 - Fortress of São José da Ponta Grossa
Atrás, o morro; à frente, o mar. Localizada em ponto estratégico, no
alto e de frente para o alto mar, a Fortaleza de São José da Ponta Grossa era
uma das três bases que garantiam a segurança da colônia no norte da Ilha de
Santa Catarina.
The hill is behind; the sea is ahead. Located at a strategic
high position facing the sea,
the Fortress of São José da Ponta Grossa was one of
three bases that ensured the safety of the colony in the north of the Island of Santa Catarina.
Suas muralhas de quase três séculos continuam firmes, mas ela está
agora imersa na vegetação.
Its nearly three centuries walls remain firm, but they are now immersed in the vegetation.
Outrora, a fortaleza garantiu o domínio português no sul da colônia.
Ou quase garantiu, já que o local foi invadido, abandonado e dominado pelos
espanhóis em 1777. As muralhas também nem sempre foram tão sólidas, pois no
século XIX a fortaleza foi pilhada pela população em busca de pedras, tijolos e
o que mais encontrassem para construir suas casas. Foi assim até sua
metamorfose ser detida na condição de patrimônio histórico.
Once the fortress
secured the Portuguese rule in the south of the colony. Or it almost secured,
since the site was invaded,
abandoned and dominated by the Spanish in 1777. Neither were the walls
always so solid, as in the nineteenth century the fortress was plundered by the local population in search of
stones, bricks and
whatever they found to build their homes. The
metamorphosis of the fortress was frozen when it achieved the condition
of historical heritage.
No século XVIII, a fortaleza chegou a ter mais de trinta peças de
artilharia, provavelmente de origem inglesa, trazidas da Bahia e devidamente posicionadas
de frente para o mar. A potência dos canhões, superior à artilharia de qualquer
embarcação, e a sua posição estratégica deveriam manter longe os invasores.
In the eighteenth century, the fortress had over thirty pieces of artillery, probably of British origin, brought from
Bahia and duly positioned facing the sea. The power of the cannons, superior to
the artillery of any vessel, and its strategic position should keep away invaders.
Hoje, o líquen nas árvores se mistura à ferrugem dos canhões de ferro
cobrindo tudo com uma tangível pátina.
Nowadays the lichen on the trees blends in with the
rust on the iron cannons covering everything with a tangible patina.
O conjunto forma atualmente uma paisagem bucólica. A prova de tempos
aparentemente mais pacíficos e da inevitável transitoriedade vem da brancura da
cadeira de plástico vazia do vigia e da nuvenzinha que passa.
The set offers today a
bucolic scenery. The proof of more peaceful
times and of the inevitable temporariness comes from the whiteness of the
watchman’s empty plastic chair and of the little cloud
that passes by.
No entanto, quem espia da janela do Quartel da Tropa pode sentir
ainda uma antiga aflição com uma ameaça iminente.
Whoever, though, peeks out the window of the Troop Headquarters can still
feel an ancient anxiety
due to an imminent threat.
Lá dentro jaz uma reconfortante réplica do uniforme de um soldado do
Regimento de Infantaria de Linha da Ilha de Santa Catarina, criado em 1739.

No Quartel da Tropa, comia-se com pratos de barro. Na Casa do
Comandante, logo ao lado, estão expostos os vestígios que reconstituem a passagem
de uma refeição pouco variada no século XVIII para uma mesa farta no século
XIX. Os restos de porcelana europeia são o testemunho disso.
At the Troop Headquarters, food
was served on clay plates. At the Commander House next door, one can see the remains
that reconstitute the passage from an eighteenth century little varied meal to a nineteenth century laden table. The remnants
of European porcelain are evidence of this.
Diversas tipos de travessas e tigelas sugerem o consumo de assados e ensopados.
Different kinds of bowls and platters suggest the consumption of stews and roasts.
Xícaras, pires, tigelinhas e açucareiros de cerâmica chinesa e europeia
indicam consumo de café, chá e doces.
Cups, saucers, small dishes, sugar bowls fashioned from Chinese and European porcelain indicate
the consumption of coffee, tea and sweets.
Talheres de metal eram raros e caros. No Brasil, fabricavam-se talheres
com cabo de osso.
Metal cutlery was rare and expensive.
In Brazil, cutlery was manufactured up with
bone handle.
Canhões do lado de fora e cenas pastoris à refeição foram uma
combinação possível na Casa do Comandante. Vestígios da mansidão da paisagem atual podem ser encontrados nos
fragmentos de porcelana. Começava ali um longo aprendizado que tornaria o bucólico fotografável.
Cannons outside and pastoral scenes at
mealtime were a possible combination
in the Commander House. Vestiges of the
serenity of the current landscape
can be found in the fragments of porcelain. There began a long
apprenticeship that would allow bucolic scenes to be shot.
Documentos mencionam pequenas criações de suínos, bovinos e
caprinos.
Documents mention small scale pigs, cattle and goats farming.
A população local fornecia víveres para os navegantes que aportassem
na ilha.
Local people provided food for sailors who
arrived at the island port.
Aqui se passa de uma paisagem campestre para uma visão mais brutal
da alimentação.
Here one passes from a countryside landscape to a more brutal vision of feeding.
Aos dois missionários que visitavam com seus acompanhantes – um
escravo e um índio, conforme mencionado em uma carta, ordenava-se oferecer uma
alimentação privilegiada composta de farinha de mandioca, feijão e peixe. Aos
sábados, eles deveriam receber boas porções de carne, azeite e a quantidade que
precisassem da melhor farinha.
A letter recommended that the two missionaries
who visited with their
entourage - a slave and an Indian, should
be offered a privileged supply of cassava flour, beans and fish. On Saturdays, they should receive good
portions of meat, olive oil, and
the needed amount of the best flour.
Fragmentos de garrafas, gargalos e bases remetem ao consumo de bebidas
de origem europeia. Copos, cálices de cristal e canecas sugerem o consumo de
vinho, conhaque, licor e cerveja pelos oficiais. As canecas de cerâmica
açoriana eram provavelmente destinadas apenas aos soldados. Há ainda os fragmentos de
cachimbos que apontam para o uso do tabaco.
Fragments of bottles, necks and bases refer to the drinking
of European beverage. Glassware, crystal goblets and mugs
suggest the consumption of wine, cognac, liqueur
and beer by the officers.
The Azorean pottery mugs were probably intended only to soldiers. There are yet fragments of pipes that point to
tobacco use.

de canhões, a violência agora é a das ondas que batem nas pedras enquanto
ataques endógenos secretamente coordenados por facções criminosas reagem à

notícia de mais de cem atentados no estado de Santa Catarina foi transmitida
pelas antenas para todos os lares.
No more cannon shots. Violence now
comes from the waves hitting the rocks while endogenous attacks secretly
coordinated by criminal organizations react against police repression by
burning buses and private cars. The antennas of every household received the news about more than one hundred attacks in the state of Santa
Catarina.
Do jardim da fortaleza, avistavam-se ao longe as caveiras nas
bandeirolas da caravela carnavalesca com sua música surpreendentemente próxima
invadindo a margem de cá.

From the fortress garden, one could catch sight of the skulls on the flags of the carnival caravel. Its loud
music sounded much closer to the seashore than it really was.
