03 – Cacupé Beach

Vastidão etérea em cima, água turva embaixo.

Ethereal vastness above, turbid water below.

Para um peixe esse mar há de parecer menos opaco. 

For a fish, this sea must seem to be not so opaque.

Até onde vai a memória de um peixe ? Talvez até onde a fome dita: perambulando pelo fundo do mar, se passar por ali novamente, se for atrás daquela pedra perto daquela alga, poderei encontrar aquele bom alimento.

How far does the fish memory go ? Probably up to where hunger dictates: wandering through the seabed, the fish may know that if it passes by that place over there once more, if it goes behind that stone near that seaweed it can find that good food again.

Mas talvez nem isso. Convém pensar que pelo menos para o peixe é possível um estado sem recordações, sem projeções, sem associações, sem abstrações. 

But maybe not even that. It is reassuring to imagine that at least for a fish it is possible to live without recollections, without projections, without mental connections, without abstractions.

Apenas sensações.

Nothing but sensations.

Nadar: talvez no mar, talvez em um vestido imenso, macio e onipresente que roça na pele a cada movimento do corpo. 

To swim -  maybe in the sea, maybe in an immense ubiquitous soft dress that caresses the skin at every body movement.

De vez em quando chega uma onda sinuosa e fria. 

Once in a while there comes a meandering cold wave.

O corpo flutuando na água morna atravessa, então,  uma bruma líquida gelada.

    The body that floats in warm water passes, then, through something like a cold liquid haze.

Deslizar no mar: as nuvens e o mar opaco, a margem ao longe e o mar opaco, uma pedra aqui outra acolá fora da água e o mar opaco, a casa e o mar opaco, a árvore e o mar opaco. De repente um esbarrão no lado opaco dessa cena. Algo indefinível, um obstáculo sólido e macio - escolheu a explicação sensata de que deveria ser uma pedra coberta de musgo e deu outra braçada rápida. Esbarrão novamente. Seguiram-se braçadas aceleradas.

Sliding through the sea: the clouds and the turbid sea, the seashore in the distance and the turbid sea, stones here and there out of the water and the turbid sea, the house and the turbid sea, the tree and the turbid sea. Suddenly there is a bump into the turbid side of this scene. Something indefinable, a soft solid obstacle – better to believe on the sensible explanation of that being a mossy stone but it sounded advisable, anyway, to take another quick stroke. Bump again. Many accelerated strokes followed.

    Embaixo do chuveiro, cairiam pequeninos peixes prateados retidos no maiô. A manicure mora há muitos anos nessa mesma praia. Contou que viu o bairro se transformar e já viu sair daquele mar jacaré, pinguim e leão marinho.

 

In the shower, tiny silver fishes would fall from the swimsuit. The manicure lady has been living for many years on this same beach. She said she had seen the neighborhood change and also an alligator, a penguin and a sea lion come out of that same sea.

O esbarrão no fundo do mar e a onda fria eram para o corpo lembrar do próprio contorno, antes que ele se confundisse com as camadas diferentes de existência e formasse com elas uma única unidade.

The bump in the depths of the sea and the cold wave reminded the body of its own contour otherwise it could merge with the different layers of existence and fuse with them into a single unit.

Ou tudo junto formasse uma desintegração só.

Não tinha sido essa a surpresa da juventude diante do encontro dos corpos: tanta intriga, tanta desavença, até morte, por uma sensação tão física? O mar imenso, ora aconchegante ora amedrontador, também queria agora evocar o desejado efeito da desintegração amorosa.

Or all combined could merge into a single disintegration.

Wasn’t there a surprise in youth when the bodies first met : so much intrigue, so much disagreement, even death, for nothing but a physical sensation? The immense sea, sometimes cozy sometimes frightening, now also wanted to evoke the desired effect of the amorous disintegration.

A menina contou à mesa o sonho que tinha tido. Ela estava no caiaque, tinha uma amiga e o pai por perto. Desculpe, mamãe, você não estava. Tinha a barbatana de um tubarão rondando. Corte onírico para outra cena. Ela e o tubarão estavam agora encalhados na areia com os rostos colados, frente a frente. Ofegantes. Olho no olho, ela não podia se mexer para não despertar da inércia o tubarão e seus afiados dentes. 

The girl told at the table she had had a dream. She was in the kayak; the father and a friend were nearby. Sorry, Mom, you were not around. There was a shark fin prowling. Dream cut to another scene. She and the shark were now stuck on the sand. They were face-to-face and breathless. Eye to eye with the shark, she stood still in order to avoid arousing from inertia the shark and its sharp teeth.

O mar é, pra ela, um território povoado de criaturas fantasticamente reais.

The sea means to her, a territory populated by creatures that are fantastically real.

O mar é, para o domingo, uma praia.

The sea means to a Sunday, a beach.

O mar é, para o pai, quem oferece algo a ser transformado em uma saborosa lagosta flambada com conhaque.

The sea means to the father, the one who offers something to be transformed into a tasty lobster flamed in brandy.

O mar é, para um bom livro, um cenário.

      The sea means to a good book, a background.

 

O mar é, para o pescador, um sustento.

            The sea means to the fisherman, a livelihood.

O mar é, para os habitantes, uma travessia.

            The sea means to the inhabitants, a crossing.

O mar é, para o remador, a medida da força do braço.

            The sea means to the rower, the measure of the arm strength.

O mar é, para o velejador, a medida da força do vento.

            The sea means to the sailor, the measure of the wind strength.

O mar é, para o vizinho, a medida da força do ruidoso motor. 

The sea means to the neighbor, the measure of the strength of the noisy engine.

O mar é, para as algas, o fluir das ondas.

            The sea means to the algae, flowing waves.

O mar guarda uma desmesura que uma taça de vinho pode ajudar a desvendar.

      The sea holds an excessiveness that a glass of wine may help to unravel.

A única certeza é a da aparição do mar

            The only certainty is of the sea appearance

e da revoada de sentidos e sensações que essa manifestação provoca.

and of the flutter of meanings and sensations that this manifestation provokes.

Cada criatura lida com um mar diferente e inventa estratégias para driblar a força da água e do vento. Uma vez despojadas as circunstâncias, disso consiste o combate: driblar forças - a força do vento, a força das ondas, a força do medo. Que desse mar abrangente reste menos a força violenta das ondas do que a maleável possibilidade do drible.

Desafio oceânico: driblar o sentido único do mar e do que mais chegar a se manifestar para desvelar as suas múltiplas revelações.

Each creature deals with a different sea and creates strategies to evade water and wind strength. Once removed the circumstances, the fight consists of dribbling the strength of others - the strength of the wind, the strength of the waves, the strength of fear. What should remain from this broad sea is less the violent wave strength than the malleable possibility of dribbling.

Oceanic challenge: to get round the single meaning of the sea and of whatever comes to manifest itself in order to unveil its multiple revelations.
