02 - Paris, Dijon, Pires do Rio : intimidades

Já era de tarde em uma mesa de restaurante em Dijon.

     It was already afternoon at a restaurant table in Dijon.

Transeuntes iam 

Passersby would

e vinham.

come and go.

 Junto com eles, também a luz ia

Along with them, the light also

e vinha.

would come and go.

Até que luz e pessoas começassem a se confundir,

Until people and light would begin to merge,

e luz efêmera e pessoas em trânsito se revelassem finalmente como uma coisa só, 

fleeting light and people in transit would reveal themselves as a single unity,

 ambas passando para o lado de dentro da garrafa.

     Já era de noite em Pires do Rio. Depois de longa viagem, um grupo animado e faminto se juntou em volta da mesa do primeiro botequim que oferecia no cardápio uma « jantinha » - ela incluía, além de carne, mandioca, feijão tropeiro, salada e arroz amontoados no mesmo farto prato. David comentou que depois de ouvirmos no ônibus quatro horas de música sertaneja para entrarmos no clima local, deveriam mudar a trilha sonora para nos re-ambientarmos ao lar no caminho de volta.

     It was already evening in Pires do Rio. After a long trip, a lively and hungry group joined at the table of the first bar they came across. The bar offered on the menu a « little dinner » that included, besides meat, cooked beans with cassava flour, cassava itself, salad and rice packed in the same hearty dish. David commented that after listening to country music for four hours in the bus in order to get familiar with the countryside, students would better change the soundtrack on the way back in order to re-enter home atmosphere.

     A conversa rodou, rodou e David contou de outra viagem que fizeram com oito alunos em um micro ônibus por uns mil quilômetros até o interior da Bahia pra fazer um jornal sobre a região onde Lamarca havia passado no começo dos anos 1970. Capitão do exército, Lamarca desertou para liderar a resistência armada durante a ditadura. Comandou o sequestro do embaixador da Suíça solto em troca da libertação de setenta presos políticos. A empreitada valeu-lhe intensa perseguição pelo regime militar que terminaria matando-o perto de Brotas de Macaúbas, seu esconderijo no sertão baiano.

The conversation ran round and round and gravitated back to David who remembered another trip with eight students in a minibus for more than six hundred miles towards the interior of Bahia. They were making a newspaper about the region where Lamarca had lived in the early 1970s. Lamarca had deserted from the army in order to lead armed resistance during Brazilian military dictatorship. He commanded the kidnapping of the Swiss ambassador who was released in exchange for seventy political prisoners. The deal earned him intense persecution by the military regime that would end up killing him in Brotas de Macaúbas near his hideout in the hinterland of Bahia.

     A conversa continuou rodando solta e Igor contou mais adiante que foi barrado em uma festa à fantasia porque estava de bermuda, chinelo, camiseta de alça e com uma latinha de cerveja na mão. 

     The conversation moved on. Igor mentioned eventually that he was once stopped at a costume party entrance because he was wearing shorts, sandals, tank top and carrying a beer can.

     Ele despistou, deu uma volta, retornou depois com outro amigo. O segurança perguntou : ‘Você está fantasiado de quê ?’ ‘De crackeiro da rodoviária.’ A fantasia verbal funcionou melhor pra ele.

     He walked away and came back later with another friend. The doorkeeper asked, 'What’s your disguise?' ‘Crack addict from the bus station.' Verbal fantasy worked better for him.

     Isabella comentou sobre o comportamento do garçon. Contou como era trabalhar no Outback e como um casal de clientes assíduos eram um desafio para a equipe pois nunca davam gorjeta mesmo sendo paparicados ao máximo.

     Isabella commented on the waiter’s behavior. She told us how it was to work in a steakhouse and how a client couple was a challenge for the staff because they never gave tips even being pampered to the utmost.

     Patrícia elogiou a comida do Bar da Raimunda na 412 Norte, mas acha o Piauí um bar meio estranho. Marianna defendeu o bar Piauí e depois começaram a falar sobre locais para dançar. Ela lembrou do Pois é. Patrícia disse que o lugar é legal, « mas é meio tiozão ».

Patricia praised the food from the Ramona’s Bar at 412 North but she thinks Piauí is a  kind of weird bar. Marianna defended the Piauí bar and they started talking about places to dance. She remembered the Indeed. Patricia said that the place is cool, “but it is rather for a middle-aged crowd”.

     Júlia, no canto do enquadramento, abaixou o olhar e sorriu sozinha da expressão « tiozão » que escapou no outro lado da mesa com dois professores. 

  Julia, at the corner of the frame,  lowered her gaze and smiled alone at the term “middle-aged crowd” mentioned at the table with two professors.

     A conta chegou e foi devidamente conferida por Mariana e Luíza.

The bill arrived and was duly checked by Mariana and Luiza.

     Deu-se no final uma pose para a foto do evento jantinha no bar. O visor da câmera exibiu o mesmo enquadramento feito por tantos alunos mostrando fotos de pessoas iluminadas com flash posando em uma mesa de bar. Intimidade era aqui uma questão de compartilhar momentaneamente comida, conversa e uma certa maneira de enquadrar que fazia parte do ritual de conversar, comer, beber e fotografar.

        At the end, some posed for a picture of the snacks-at-the-bar event. The viewfinder displayed that same scene framed by so many students showing pictures of people illuminated by a flash at a bar table. Intimacy was here an issue of momentarily sharing food, conversation and a certain way of framing that was part of a ritual that consisted of chatting, eating, drinking and shooting.

     Em sala, retrospectivamente, indagados se a viagem para fazer um revista online sobre uma cidade do interior era mesmo uma tarefa válida, Mateus diria que ao ouvir o comício para prefeito em Pires do Rio e ser obrigado a ficar ligado, teve certeza que o quê queria da vida era mesmo ser jornalista. O interior goiano parecia ter trazido para ele, então, uma luminosa revelação que uniu um projeto íntimo e uma emaranhada campanha política. 

     Back to the classroom, retrospectively, students were asked if traveling to a country town to make an online magazine about it was really a valid activity. Matthew answered that when he was at the political rally at Pires do Rio forced to pay attention to the mayor candidate, he realized that what he wanted out of life was indeed to become a journalist. The interior of Goiás seemed to have allowed him, then, a luminous revelation that had put together an intimate project and a tangled political campaign.
